NPFL Matchday 23 Round Up: Plateau United stunned as Rangers escaped with 1 point in Maidiguri

Though there was an away victory in the matchday 23 of the Nigeria Professional Football League, the most exciting result of the week was in far away Maidiguri where the defending champion, Rangers International were forced to 1-1 draw by the Borno Warriors.

Inside the Akure Township Stadium, Plateau United extended their lead at the top of the table after coming from a goal down to beat 10-man Sunshine Stars 2-1, Ezekiel Thompson gave hosts Sunshine Stars, playing behind closed doors as punishment for crowd trouble, the lead in the 30th minute before Emmanuel Odafe equalised for Plateau on 61st minute. Emeka Umeh scored the winning goal in the final minute to seal the win for Plateau United.

Sunshine Stars goalkeeper David Ariyo was sent off at the added time of the game. The win took Plateau United’s points to 42, five clear their closest rival.

The Al-Ittihad of Liberia returnee, Tony Okpotu scored the fifth hat-trick of the NPFL season when Lobi Stars dumped title chasers MFM FC 3-1 at home. It takes only 31 minutes for the Lobi hit-man to demystify the defense of the Olukoya Boys as they fell like pack of cards to the prowess of Okpotu who scored 12 goals last season before moving to Libya and he had scored 9 this season. The result has moved MFM fc back to the 4th position on the log. NPFL top scorer, Stephen Odey, was not listed for the for the game.

In Gombe, Gombe United needed a late goal to deny Enyimba International their second away win of the season as they played a 1-1 draw. Bartholomew Ibenegbu {Mosquito}opened the scoring for Enyimba in the 55th minute before Suleiman Usman equalised with 10 minutes left in the game.

Shooting Stars on their part had to settle for a scoreless draw at home by Kano Pillars; a result that has seen fans calling for the head of Coach Fatai Amoo as they are rooted in the 19th position of the log with 26 points.

Rivers United continued their woeful performances as they lost 1-0 away to Niger Tornadoes in Lokoja, Abdullahi converted a penalty for the home team in the 11th minute of play.

In Nnewi, IfeanyiUbah overcame ABS 2-0 thanks to goals from their Ivorian imports, Yaya Kone and Pascal Seka.

Yaya Kone scored the first goal in the 28th minute and Pascal Seka doubled the lead in the 58th minute of play.

FC IfeanyiUbah are now second on the log with 37 points, the same points with the 3rd and 4th positions.

Total number of 16 goals were scored from 8 matches as two games were postponed.
