MFM Will Qualify for the CAF Champions’ League Group Stage – Sunday Ojieh

Following the comprehensive defeat of Otoho d’Oyo by MC Alger in the preliminary stage of the CAF Champion’s League, the former Team Manager of the Olukoya Boys had said confidently that the team will come out the better side over the two legs in the second round fixture against the experienced Algeria team.

It should be recalled that Otoho d’oyo of Congo defeated MC Alger two goals to nil in the first leg of their fixture, only for the North African team to return the favour by scoring nine goals against their Congolese opponent in the reverse fixture.

Speaking to our correspondence, the former TM said, casting doubts over the ability of the team to achieve a feat did not start today. “When we started, nobody gave us a chance to play in any of the leagues in Nigeria, but we started from the Nationwide League. When the opportunity to play in the National League came through the Sports Director of MFM Worldwide, Mr. Godwin Enakhena and Alhaji Gafar Bolowotan, nobody gave us the chances of sustaining the National League status, but in two years, we did not only sustain it, we qualified for the Nigeria Professional Football League as the first Church ever. Again, people came with the theory that our qualification was a fluke, that in no time, we would be relegated, but in just two seasons, we’re in the continent, playing in the CAF Champions’ League.

Even when the team went for the Church World Cup, nobody believed in the ability of the team to get to anywhere, but we came back as the winner of the coveted trophy. So, irrespective of what people are saying now, I am absolutely sure that The Mountain of Fire & Miracle Ministry will play in the group stage of the CAF Champion’s League.

“I don’t know what the result is going to be in Algiers, but I’m very sure that MFM will not be defeated away from home and MC Alger won’t escape defeat today inside the Soccer Temple.” Don’t forget, our first Round opponent, Real Bamako was an experienced team who has played in the Semi Finals of the CAF Champions League in the past but where are they today?’

Sunday Ojieh who spent over a decade in the active service of the club said that the team as “a Gang’ has a winning culture and what they lacked in experienced in continental competitions, they have in ability to have played together for a very long time and this is the quality that will see them through. “Some of the Boys have been together for a long time, even the coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, “Sabi Coach’ was once a player in the team before he became their coach. So, majority of the Boys are not just playing mates, but long standing friends. This is one of the many factors that will take the team very far in the Champion’s league.

It may sound funny and alien to the understanding of average football followers, another factor that will see us through is the fact that MFM is a praying team and over the last ten years, I can tell you instances where pundits and experts had written us off and we miraculously moved to the next stage.

When we qualified for the Premier League, nobody gave us a chance, but before you know what happened, we have qualified. If you could recollect our last game against FC Ifeanyi Uba in our first season in the NPFL. At home, one of our most influential players, Ifeanyi Ifeanyi was red carded, a penalty was blown against our team. We had penalty appeal and the Referee didn’t give us. But when everybody thought all hope was lost, “Olorun Daniel Olukoya” (The God of Daniel Olukoya) arose and we came out victorious in that game. Not only that, as our victory won’t be enough for us to escape relegation, results at other venues also work in our favour and we eventually escaped relegation and finished second in the following season.

So, logically speaking, we may be looking at MC Alger as a team with better experience, but that was the same way Goliath was better experienced and we all know how the battle between him an unexperienced David ended.

Talking about his shocking exit from his team as the Team Manager at a time he has worked tirelessly to see the bring continental football to Lagos after almost two decades, “let me start by correcting an impression,  I’m a member of MFM and as a member of MFM, I will always be part of MFM football club.”

Also, “I might not be the Team Manager now, but I still attend the team’s training and still do a lot of things with the team. I have a very cordial relationship with both coaching crew and the players.”

He continued, “The incidences that led to my resignation was unfortunate and I regretted what happened at the time. What’s is happening now is that I’m going through a period of correction and reconciliation. The General Overseer is my father and I am his son. Have you seen where a good father cast away his son permanently?”

“There will be a big news very soon. The most important thing for now is for the team to be focused and qualify for the Group stage of the CAF Champion’s League and also start getting results in the League.” He concluded.
