Gold Coast 2018: Two Silver Medals for Nigeria in Quick Succession

Team Nigeria’s hope of appearing on the Medals table at the on-going Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games came to life as the table tennis team led by Veteran Segun Toriola lost 0-3 in the men’s team finals against India on Monday morning.

The team which defeated highly rated England in the semi finals, lost to India in the finals by 3-0 to claim the Silver Medal.

As the celebration of Nigeria first medal was going on, Nigeria won her first individual medal of the game through

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi who placed second and thereby won another Silver medal for Nigeria in the Shotput Finals. The 25- year old Athlete became the first Nigerian individual medalist at the Goal Coast, Australia event.

In the Table Tennis event, India’s Sharath Achanta beat Bode Abiodun 3-1 in the first game despite Abiodun winning the first set 11-4.

Veteran, Segun Toriola was the next up for the Nigerian team but after taking the first set 12-10, the most experienced in the team lost his way losing the next three, 11-3, 11-3, and 11-4.

The doubles team of Omotayo and Abiodun could not stop the onslaught of Harmeet Desai and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, who beat the Nigerian team 11-8, 11-5, and 11-3.

India, therefore, took the gold as Nigeria won a silver, the first medal to be won by Team Nigeria in Gold Coast, Australia.

Nigeria still stands a chance of winning more medals especially in the 100m events
