The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, GCON, led the grand inauguration of the NFF-FIFA Players’ Hostel and newly constructed training pitches at the iconic MKO Abiola National Stadium. This event marked not only a milestone for Nigerian football but also a transformative leap in the development of football infrastructure in Africa’s most populous nation.
As the sun shone brightly over the capital, an impressive assembly of political leaders, sports moguls, business elites, and football legends gathered to witness a turning point in the nation’s sporting history. This long-awaited project, funded by FIFA, is designed to provide Nigeria’s national football teams with state-of-the-art facilities that will reduce travel and accommodation costs while enhancing team performance and management.
“This is a monumental project, and the National Assembly is fully committed to supporting its success,” said Speaker Abbas as he cut the ribbon, officially signalling the commencement of this game-changing initiative. He went on to extend his heartfelt congratulations to the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for their tireless work in bringing the vision to life, as well as thanking FIFA for its unwavering support in funding the project.
FIFA’s representative, Gelson Fernandes, took the stage next, reaffirming the global body’s commitment to supporting football infrastructure worldwide. “FIFA, under the leadership of President Gianni Infantino, has placed a strong emphasis on building facilities that will foster growth and development at all levels of the sport,” Fernandes said. His words reflected the global vision FIFA holds for enhancing football everywhere.
NFF President Ibrahim Gusau could not hide his excitement, recognising the project as a crucial part of his administration’s broader vision for Nigerian football. “These facilities will significantly improve our team management, reduce costs, and ultimately fuel more investments in grassroots football development,” Gusau remarked, stressing the long-term benefits that will be felt from the grassroots level all the way to the national teams.
The event saw a range of influential figures from all sectors of Nigerian society offering their support, including the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Alhaji Shehu Dikko; Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Abdul Ningi; former Sports Minister Chief Sunday Dare; and Nigerian football legend Olusegun Odegbami, who passionately spoke on behalf of the football icons present.
Also present were the Ambassador of the UAE to Nigeria, His Excellency Salem Ali Shamsi, former Sports Minister Senator John Owan Enoh, and NFF 2nd Vice President Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, as well as several members of the NFF Executive Committee.
