Dreamstar Ladies Shine in Abuja with Confident Win against Plateau Queens

Kaosarat Akanji and Oluebube Ibezundu inspire Lagos side to a thrilling opening victory as Dreamstar Ladies chase NWFL Championship qualification

Dreamstar Ladies of Lagos kicked off their 2025 NWFL Nationwide League campaign in style, defeating Plateau Queens 4–2 inside the Bwari Stadium in Abuja on Saturday.

The Lagos-based side wasted no time asserting dominance, taking the lead in just the third minute through Kaosarat Akanji’s precise free-kick that caught the Plateau goalkeeper off guard. That early strike set the tone for what became a thrilling encounter filled with goals and drama.

By the 13th minute, Dreamstar doubled their lead when Oluebube Ibezundu calmly finished off a sweeping team move to make it 2–0. Five minutes later, Ibezundu was on target again, grabbing her brace and extending the lead to three as the Lagos team looked unstoppable in the opening quarter of the match.

However, Plateau Queens found a way back into the contest when Juliana Solomon pulled one back in the 25th minute to make it 3–1 before halftime.

The Jos-based side came out fighting in the second half and reduced the deficit further in the 55th minute through Juliet Okoloko, who slotted home her team’s second goal to make it 3–2.

Dreamstar Ladies, however, sealed the game in the 71st minute when Aishat Sanni restored their two-goal cushion after an assist from the energetic Akanji.

Speaking after the match, Sanni expressed her delight at the team’s strong start.

“We are happy for the goals; we are happy for the winning, and we are ready to do more in the next game,” she said.

Akanji, who both scored and assisted in the game, credited teamwork and determination for the victory.

“I’m glad I scored the first goal for my team. I’m very happy and excited. In our next game, we are going to put in more effort,” she said.

Team captain Daranijo Rofiyat also praised the team’s spirit and confidence after the opening win.

“Winning this game gives us confidence and morale. It’s not about underrating any team; we are here to showcase our talent and gain promotion,” she stated.

With the win, Dreamstar Ladies sit second on the log, just behind Rangers Women on goal difference. They will next face Osklean Queens of Port Harcourt tomorrow afternoon in Abuja, where another victory could put them firmly on course for NWFL Championship qualification.
