As the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup narrows, all eyes will be on Rabat on Thursday afternoon when Nigeria’s Super Eagles take on the Panthers of Gabon in what promises to be a fiercely contested semi-final in the African play-offs.
The much-anticipated encounter is scheduled for 4 p.m. (Nigerian time) at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco. Both nations arrived early in the week to fine-tune their preparations for what could define their footballing future.

For Gabon, head coach Thierry Mouyouma has assembled a full-strength squad featuring a blend of experience and flair. Captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang headlines the team alongside Denis Bouanga, Mario Lemina, Didier Ndong, Guelor Kanga, and veteran defender Bruno Ecuele Manga. The squad is based at the luxurious Ziaida Palace and Spa Sports Complex in Benslimane, about 50 kilometres from Morocco’s capital.
Mouyouma, confident yet realistic, understands the magnitude of the task ahead.
“We’re here to write another page in Gabonese football history,” he said. “If Gabon wants to grow and move beyond the quarter-finals at future Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, we must learn to compete with the continent’s best — and Nigeria is one of them. This play-off is a decisive turning point for us.”
However, history offers a sobering reminder for the Panthers. In the last four decades, Gabon have managed just one victory over Nigeria — a statistic that underscores the uphill challenge they face against a team brimming with attacking power and experience.
The Super Eagles, who arrived in Rabat on Monday, boast a formidable lineup that includes Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, and captain William Troost-Ekong. The team’s dominant 4–0 victory over Benin in their final qualifying match sent a clear message of intent to their continental rivals.
Troost-Ekong, however, remains cautious ahead of the fixture.
“Gabon is a solid team. Aubameyang leads a talented group that can cause real problems for defenders,” the Nigerian skipper warned. “In Africa, you should never underestimate any opponent — and we won’t make that mistake with Gabon.”
Thursday’s clash is shaping up to be an enthralling contest of styles — Gabon’s pace and flair against Nigeria’s power and precision. With a ticket to the intercontinental play-offs and a potential World Cup spot at stake, neither side will hold back.
