Young talents from Lagos Educational Districts battle through intense mental duels inside Agege Stadium as new champions emerge
The 2025 Obasa Games Chess Finals delivered a compelling display of youthful brilliance and discipline as secondary school students from across Lagos State converged at the indoor sports hall of Agege Stadium. Representing all Educational Districts in the state, the competitors demonstrated not only their mastery of the board but also the mental endurance that defines modern scholastic chess.

After several rounds marked by tense calculations and long stretches of strategic thinking, fifteen year old Adu Samuel of Sasa Community High School, Alimosho, under Educational District One, rose above a competitive field to claim the championship title. His performance reflected both confidence and composure, especially in the final games, where he navigated difficult middlegame positions with maturity beyond his age.
District One produced the top two performers of the day. Fourteen-year-old Adeiga David of Multigrace College delivered an equally impressive run and secured second place after a series of tightly contested matches. His playing style, marked by quick decision-making and sharp tactical instincts, earned him respect from coaches and spectators alike.

Third place went to fifteen-year-old Patrick Praise of ABS College, representing Educational District Four from Mainland Local Government. His resilience throughout the tournament stood out, particularly in the penultimate round, where he fought back from a difficult position to secure a critical victory that ensured his place on the podium.
To reward their outstanding performances, a total of five hundred thousand naira will be shared among the medallists. The prize serves as both recognition and encouragement for young players whose talent continues to elevate the profile of chess across Lagos State.
