Nigeria Under Fifteen Team Suffers Heavy Defeat to Cote d’Ivoire in WAFU B African Schools Championship Qualifiers

Nigeria’s quest for redemption intensifies after a difficult start at the African Schools Football Championship Zonal Qualifiers in Burkina Faso.

Nigeria’s struggles at the continental youth level continued on Monday as the nation’s under-fifteen boys suffered a difficult 4–1 defeat to Cote d’Ivoire in their opening match of the WAFU B Qualifying Tournament for the African Schools Football Championship in Burkina Faso.

The match, played under bright afternoon conditions, quickly slipped away from the Nigerian team as the Elephanteaux showcased superior organisation, intensity and precision in attack. Côte d’Ivoire stamped their authority on the contest inside the first ten minutes through N’Goran Yao Philippe, who capitalised on hesitant defending to fire home the opener in the sixth minute.

The Ivorians doubled their lead twelve minutes later when Diarrassouba Dramane finished off a sweeping move that carved open the Nigerian backline. Nigeria struggled to settle into any rhythm and paid again for their defensive lapses when Meite Christ Loan struck in the twenty-second minute. By the thirty-fourth minute Konate Mory had added the fourth, putting the match beyond reach long before the interval.

Though Nigeria showed greater composure in the second half and created a few half chances, the damage had already been done. Peter Moses’ late consolation goal offered a brief spark, but it was not enough to change the overall narrative on a difficult day for the young Nigerians.

The defeat extends a worrying trend, as Nigerian teams at U-17, U-20 and U-23 levels have all endured recent disappointments in continental and global competitions. Monday’s loss once again underlines the challenges facing Nigeria’s youth development pathway and the urgent need for structural improvements.

Nigeria will now attempt to salvage their campaign when they face the Republic of Benin in their final Group B match tomorrow. A win will be required to restore confidence and keep any hope of progression alive.

In the girls’ category Nigeria was notably absent, failing to present a team for the competition. As a result Cote d’Ivoire and hosts Burkina Faso advanced automatically to the semifinals, highlighting yet another gap in Nigeria’s participation and representation in youth football development.
