Akwa Ibom's Bold Move to Restructure Football Clubs Ahead of New Season

In line with Governor Umo Eno’s Arise Agenda, the dissolution is a part of plans to elevate sports in the state for future success.

In a significant move aimed at reshaping the future of football in Akwa Ibom State, Elder Paul Bassey, the State’s Commissioner for Sports, has officially announced the immediate dissolution of the management teams of all four state-funded football clubs. This decision comes at the close of the 2024/25 Nigeria Football League season and signals a new chapter for Akwa Ibom’s sports development.

The four clubs affected by this decision are the Akwa United Football Club, Dakkada Football Club, Ibom Angels Football Club, and Ibom Youth Football Club. These clubs, which are owned and funded by the Akwa Ibom State Government, have seen varied levels of performance over the course of the recent season.

During a crucial meeting in Uyo, Elder Bassey addressed the representatives of all four clubs and outlined the next steps. In his announcement, he directed that the chairmen and secretaries of the clubs must submit their handover notes within two weeks, ensuring a smooth transition as the new management teams are set to take charge.

In response to the announcement, Mr. Samuel Umoh, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Football Association, acknowledged the challenges faced by the state teams during the past season. Representatives from the clubs also voiced their support for the decision. Elder Omon Bassey, Coach Aniedi Dickson, Coach Edwin Okon, and Coach Lawrence Iquaibom—speaking on behalf of Akwa United, Dakkada, Ibom Angels, and Ibom Youth, respectively—thanked the Honourable Commissioner for the opportunity to serve. They promised their ongoing support and commitment to the growth of football in the state, signaling a unified front as they prepare for the next phase of Akwa Ibom football.

This bold decision marks a turning point in Akwa Ibom’s sports culture.
