Super Eagles Stun Gabon 4–1 in Extra Time to Reach CAF World Cup Playoff Final

Akor Adams set the tone, Victor Osimhen delivered the knockout — Nigeria’s resilience shone through in Rabat as they stormed into the CAF World Cup playoff final.

Rabat, Morocco —
It was a night of redemption, resilience, and renewed belief for Nigeria’s Super Eagles as they produced a commanding extra-time display to defeat Gabon 4–1 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. The victory sealed Nigeria’s place in the CAF World Cup playoff final and kept alive their hopes of returning to the FIFA World Cup stage.

After 90 minutes of tense football that ended 1–1, the Super Eagles unleashed their attacking power in extra time, scoring three unanswered goals to secure a resounding win. They will now face DR Congo—who edged Cameroon 1–0 in the other semifinal—in Sunday’s continental decider, which will determine Africa’s representative in the intercontinental playoff.

A Frustrating First Half

The Super Eagles dominated possession from the start, dictating the tempo and camping in Gabon’s half for long spells. Despite their fluid movement and control, clear chances were few and far between. Gabon’s compact defence frustrated Nigeria’s forwards, with Victor Osimhen often isolated and double-marked by the Panthers’ defenders.

Nigeria’s persistence finally paid off in the 78th minute. Akor Adams, who had been a lively presence up front, capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot home the opener — a moment of relief and reward for their sustained pressure.

Late Equalizer Forces Extra Time

Just when the Super Eagles seemed poised to close out the match, Gabon struck a dramatic equaliser in the 89th minute. Mario Lemina’s deflected effort caught goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali wrong-footed, silencing the Nigerian supporters and sending the game into extra time.

Extra-Time Brilliance and Osimhen’s Double

Nigeria responded with renewed energy and tactical precision. In the 97th minute, Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s lead after a well-orchestrated buildup involving Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi. That goal reignited belief, and from there, the Super Eagles took full control.

Victor Osimhen, who had endured a frustrating night, then burst into life with two stunning goals. His angled strike in the 102nd minute extended Nigeria’s lead to 3–1 before his composed finish eight minutes later sealed a famous 4–1 victory.

Tactical Masterclass from Eric Chelle

Head coach Eric Chelle’s substitutions proved decisive. Frank Onyeka’s introduction stabilised midfield control, while the defensive pair of Chidozie Awaziem and William Troost-Ekong ensured Gabon’s late advances were effectively repelled.

Chelle’s tactical adjustments reflected the Super Eagles’ growing cohesion under pressure, turning what had been a scrappy contest into a statement victory.
